Gym memberships and renewals: types, prices and the churn rate
The membership is a fitness gym's product; everything else is a service that supports it. Real revenue, though, does not come from the first sale but from the renewal. Below you'll find the membership types used by Romanian clubs, the usual prices and the levers that cut the churn rate.
How a membership works (short answer)
- The member picks a membership type and optionally pays a joining fee for the access card.
- The membership gets a start date and an expiry date, visible at the front desk and at the turnstile.
- Access to the gym is validated on every entry, according to the membership's validity.
- Seven days before expiry, the member automatically receives a renewal message.
- On automatic renewal, payment is taken from the saved card, with no trip to the front desk.
Membership types
Membership types used by fitness gyms in Romania
| Type | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Rolling monthly | Paid month by month, with no commitment | New and seasonal members |
| 12-month contract | A lower monthly price in exchange for the commitment | Regular members, the best retention |
| Ten-session package | Used up entry by entry, with no fixed date | Members who come irregularly |
| Off-peak membership | Access only outside the 18:00–21:00 peak | Balancing traffic in the gym |
| Corporate membership | Invoiced to the company, for several employees | Clubs with offices nearby |
Usual prices in Romania
- A monthly fitness gym membership generally costs between 120 and 350 RON.
- The joining fee is charged once and covers the access card and the initial assessment.
- A 12-month contract lowers the monthly price, but needs a clear termination clause.
- Personal training sessions are sold separately, in packages, at a per-session price.
What raises the renewal rate
- Automatic renewal with a saved card, cancellable in one click.
- A renewal message sent 7 days before expiry, not on the expiry day itself.
- Freezing the membership over a holiday, as an alternative to cancelling.
- A call to members who have not come in for three weeks.
- Guaranteed group-class booking for members on an annual contract.
Common mistakes
- Sending the renewal message after expiry, once the member has already left.
- Not offering a freeze, so the member cancels instead of suspending the membership.
- Selling only rolling monthly memberships and having no predictable revenue in the summer.
- Not tracking churn by membership type, so you don't know which product is losing members.
